Famous for it's ancient Drago Tree and located on the north-west coast of Tenerife, Icod de los Vinos is a traditional town with great views to Mount Teide and in easy reach of the beach.
Icod de los Vinos
Icod de los Vinos is a traditional inland town and a hotspot on the tourist trails with daytrippers coming to visit the Drago Tree, the butterfly farm and the wine museum. The town is set between the coastal resorts of Garachico and Puerto de la Cruz and minutes from the Teide National Park.
Beaches
The nearest beach is in the charming village of San Marcos which is just a bus ride (or a few minutes drive) away. The black sand beach is sheltered by the cliffs and the waters are suitable for swimming. The natural rock pools of Garachico are approx 5.5km (8 minutes drive) and are ideal for swimming or diving with plenty of space for sunbathing.
Things to Do
Browse the Malvasia Museum, housed in a 17th century character house with a pretty courtyard. You can sample and learn the history of this famous Canarian wine and, of course, have the opportunity to purchase a bottle or two.
Visit the Parque del Drago to see the famous Drago Milenario, an ancient Dragon Tree with a tale to tell. Next stop is the Mariposario del Drago, where you can stroll around the tropical indoor garden spotting all the colourful butterflies.
Take a fascinating tour of the Cueva del Viento, the largest lava tube in Europe, which flows from Pico Viejo in the Teide National Park.
Out and About
The town has a good selection of Canarian restaurants but if you need an English cuppa, pop into Rosy Lees for afternoon tea. After a day at the beach in San Marcos, head up to the bars and restaurants on the cliff and enjoy a sundowner or evening meal watching the sunset over the bay.
Icod de los Vinos also has some pretty plazas, the main one is home to the San Marco church and just around the corner you will find the main shopping street and numerous little boutiques.
Nearby Attractions
Just 20 minutes drive from Puerto de la Cruz and La Oratova, you can spend a couple of days exploring historic streets or lapping up the sunshine beside the lovely pools of Lago Martianez.
The highly acclaimed and long established Loro Parque is just 25 minutes drive away and well worth a visit. A beautifully landscaped park with a wildlife zoo, huge aquarium and spectacular shows with whale, dolphins, sea lions and parrots.
