Corfu Hotels
Corfu is an Ionian Island that is situated between mainland Greece and Italy and is a popular spot for British holiday makers. It is often known as the Emerald Island or the Garden of Eden due to the fact that it is covered in Cyprus trees, olive groves and wild flowers. There is so much on offer in Corfu, from lazy days on the beach and the many outdoor activities to lively nights at the many entertainment venues.
How Hot?
A sunny island which experiences long hot dry summers with up to 13 hours of daily sunshine during the peak months. From mid-June things start to heat up with the average temperatures in the low-eighties during June and rising to the high-eighties and nineties during July and August. The months of July and August see the northerly Meltemi winds, providing a cooling break from the summer heat.
Out and About
Corfu has become a very popular destination and offers a range of historical and religious monuments, family entertainment and outdoor activities. Corfu is much more than just a beach holiday and is just waiting to be explored.
One of Corfu's top attractions is Achillion Palace, situated in picturesque gardens, overlooking the sea and Corfu Town. This beautiful building once featured in The James Bond film 'For Your Eyes Only' is really well worth a visit and you will be sure to get some great pictures.
There are several water parks in Corfu but the largest and probably the best one in Europe is Aqualand Corfu. With a variety of slides and pools to suit all ages and a range of other activities such as arcade, bouncy castle and adventure playground, it is a great day out for all the family and one certainly not to be missed.
We do recommend you take a boat trip of some kind, whether you hire a boat or join an organised boat tour, it is a great way of seeing the area. There are many secluded beaches along the way so why not pack up a lunch or have a BBQ on one of the beaches and enjoy a spot of snorkelling or a relaxing swim. Alternatively, you could visit the nearby islands of Antipaxos or Paxos or take a trip to mainland Greece. Whatever you choose to do it is a great way to explore and you will be sure of a great day out.
Why not take a trip to Paleokastritasa, the islands most treasured beauty spot. It can become very busy with day trippers but is well worth for it's rugged hillside, crystal clear waters and laid back Greek ambience. The downside being that the resort is quite long and can take over an hour to walk the length of it which can be can tricky in the heat.
Corfu is great for everyone, whether it's quiet day relaxing on the beach or a day sightseeing.
Out for Lunch!
The cuisine in Corfu is very similar to that of Greece and the Greek islands everywhere. Olives, cheeses, fresh fruit and vegetables as well as olive oil, play a big part in Corfu. Whilst staying here try out some of the traditional dishes including Sofrito-Beef in white wine sauce, Bourou-Bourou-Vegetable and Pasta soup or Sykomaitha-Rooster with pasta. The Greeks love to eat and all look forward to Sunday lunch which is a typical long drawn out affair for all the family to enjoy.
As you wander down the streets of Corfu you will enjoy the smell of all the different products being cooked. In the traditional restaurants you will be served a Mediterranean cuisine. These can be found further inland and are generally cheaper than those in the tourist areas.
