Sightseeing in Boston

Start planning your exciting getaway to Boston now, as there’s so much you’ll want to see and do when you get there! Sports fan or not, one of the top things to see in Boston is Fenway Park – home to the Boston Red Sox. Tour the old school stadium and discover the history of the famous team and its players. If you can, try to catch a Red Sox game and for the full experience, go for a pre-game drink at one of the pubs nearby and grab yourself a Fenway Frank to eat during the game.

If you love to visit museums and art galleries, make sure to visit Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. This museum is the fourth largest in the country and is filled with nearly half a million unique art pieces from around the world. From art-lovers to general culture enthusiasts, this is a fantastic outing and the perfect way to spend the day.

Take a wander around America’s oldest park, Boston Common, and take in the beautiful, lush greenery that lines the paths around the gardens. Attached to Boston Common is the Public Garden, where you can discover the beautiful flora and fauna, the monuments and statues, and even try out the swan boats on the lake.

Food & Drink in Boston

From doughnuts to dumplings, pancakes to pizza - exploring the food in Boston is an adventure in itself, so you might want to add it to your itinerary! With a glorious waterfront, it's no surprise that this city serves its fair share of seafood, but perhaps the most iconic dish is the lobster roll. Comprised of flaked lobster coated in hot butter or mayonnaise and stuffed into a split-top bun, it's the perfect combination of comfort and sophistication. Some restaurants dress the sandwich up with lettuce, cucumber or tomatoes, but the classic roll is most authentic to Boston. Stop by Row 34 on Congress Street for a true-to-self, no-frills lobster roll.

Speaking of sandwiches, it seems only fitting to mention one of the most iconic sandwiches of all - the bagel. From Katz Bagel Bakery's popular pizza bagel to the T-Rex bagel at Bagelsaurus, stuffed with homemade almond butter, banana, honey and bacon (don't knock it 'til you try it!), there's a bagel to suit all tastes in this city.

There are plenty of bars in Boston too, but Cheers is a must for cocktails, beers and a cosy atmosphere. You might recognise the name from the American sitcom of the same title. The bar can be seen in numerous episodes of the show, making it not only a great drinking spot but a popular tourist attraction, too!

If there's one thing we can be sure of, it's that your taste buds won't be left unsatisfied in Boston - and did we mention that the desserts are sweet as pie? Literally! As you might guess from the name, Boston cream pie is a staple in the city. Technically, it's more of a cake - but when a dessert is this delicious, we're not here to judge. It consists of a yellow butter cake filled with cream or custard and topped with a rich chocolate glaze, so if you see it on the menu be sure to grab a slice!

Useful info for visiting Boston

If you’re shipping up to Boston, there are a few useful travel tidbits that you need to know before you go. Firstly, there are plenty of flights from the UK and Ireland to this state capital, owing in part to the large population of Irish Americans that live there. Flight times do vary depending on your chosen home airport but you’ll generally be in the air for around eight hours on a direct route. The time when you land will be five hours behind the UK – keep this in mind if you book any transfers from the airport or tickets to Boston attractions!

You’ll need US dollars for your trip to this all-American city and – although most places will take major credit cards – it’s always good to have dollar bills and cents on hand to pay for any souvenirs or street food you stumble across while you’re exploring. The official language spoken in America is English but expect to hear snippets of Spanish, French, Chinese and Portuguese (among many others); Boston is home to people from all over the world, and it’s a draw for tourists from all corners of the globe too.
