New trolley fee charges at Manchester Airport

Posted by Sue Anderson, 2nd Feb 2012

Manchester Airport has decided to invest over £1 million in replacing its ageing luggage trolleys with a new, lighter and easier to manoeuvre model.

In place from April 2012, the new trolleys are GPS-enabled which well help to keep adequate stocks ready for passengers use. This will perhaps explain the non-refundable charge of £1 or €2 coin that passengers will face for use of each trolley, and in case you don't have the correct coin at hand, change machines are available and you will also be able to pay by credit card.

Since 2007, over £100 million has been spent on Manchester Airport, creating a modern and popular airport, which was recently named the Best UK Airport at the annual Globe Travel Awards.

Currently only 5% of passengers use the trolleys and this way only the user pays rather than spreading the costs to everyone. Charging for trolley use won't be a popular decision, but for the airport to continue making multi-million pound investments and improving the airport for all passengers some services will need to be charged for.

Manchester Airport will publicise the new trolley charges via social media channels, on their website and by informing airlines and travel agents.

If only 5% of travellers use the trolleys currently, surely even fewer will use the new trolleys at £1 a spin? Is this just another example of airports and airlines trying to squeeze out every extra pound they can from customers?
