BBC's 'Africa' Prompts Rise in African Holiday Searches

Posted by Sue Anderson, 4th Feb 2013

With Sir David Attenborough's 'Africa' in full swing on BBC One, we noticed a spike on site with searches and bookings for holidays in Africa.

Searches for holidays to African destinations have risen by 310%

With many UK holidaymakers choosing more traditional destinations for their trips abroad, such as Benidorm, Spain and Playa de las America in Tenerife, others are seeking more exotic locations to spend their breaks. Since Sir David Attenborough's 'Africa' began showing on BBC One, searches for holidays to African destinations have risen by 310%.

Our team decided to look more in-depth at our site statistics to see what impact, if any, the wildlife documentary had had on the amount of interest shown by visitors to the site towards African destinations for holidays.

Cape Town, Morocco and Tunisia were the most searched destinations

Since the first episode of 'Africa' aired 3 weeks ago, we here at sunshine.co.uk have witnessed a 310% increase in searches for holidays to African destinations when compared to the average month. The top holiday searches relating to Africa in the past 3 weeks have been as follows:

1. Cape Town

2. Morocco

3. Tunisia

4. West Africa

5. African Safari

6. Egypt

7. Congo

8. Gambia

9. Cape Verde

10. Kenya

Bookings for African destinations have increased by 37%

Actual holiday bookings for African destinations have increased by 37% since the first episode of 'Africa' was aired, when again compared to bookings made through the site in the average month.

Whilst some African destinations, such as Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt and resorts in Tunisia, have been firm favourites for a while, Sir David Attenborough's latest show has sparked an interest in some more exotic destinations, which is unsurprising given some of the spectacular footage that can be seen.

However, if you are planning on travelling far off the beaten track, it's important to remember to check travel safety information. We would always advise referring to the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) office for advice and information on how to stay safe on your travels.
