'Water Park' most popular holiday excursion

Posted by Sue Anderson, 28th Aug 2012

Our latest study has revealed that water parks are the most popular type of excursion for families on holiday abroad; whilst visits to historical ruins or points of interest fell to the bottom of Britons' list of priorities of places to visit with their family.

We carried out the poll as part of ongoing research into the holiday habits and preferences of people around the UK. 1,489 UK adults with children took part in the poll and answered questions surrounding what they typically did on holiday. All respondents had been on a family holiday abroad in the past year.

58% of those polled said they went on excursions on their last holiday abroad

When asked, 'Did you go on any excursions on your last family holiday abroad?' the majority, 58%, of those taking part said 'yes'. These respondents were then asked how many excursions they had been on, to which the average answer was '2'. The majority of respondents said their last family holiday abroad had lasted for 10 days.

Water parks, wildlife parks and boat trips top the list of favourite excursions

All respondents who said they had been on an excursion on their last family trip abroad were asked to select all trips that applied from a list of possible answers. The most popular excursions when on family holidays, according to the poll, were as follows;

1. Water park 61%

2. Wildlife park/ Zoo 54%

3. Boat trip 49%

4. Theme park 32%

5. 4x4 tour 17%

6. City visit 12%

7. Water Sports 9%

8. Areas of natural beauty 9%

9. Landmarks 5%

10. Historical ruins/Points of interest 3%

Less than a fifth of those polled thought that the excursion had enhanced their holiday

When asked, 'Do you think your excursion choice(s) enhanced your holiday?' just 17% of those who had been on one said 'yes'.

Sunbathing can get a bit boring after a while and it can be hard to keep kids (and adults) entertained, so excursions and days out are a great idea to keep everyone busy. It's always worth checking out what activities are available near where you're staying, as you never know, you might discover a new hobby!

Water parks are often found in or near most family resorts, in Europe at least, and can provide a great base for a day away from the hotel or beach. However, we think the reason why a lot of people enjoy water parks is because you only ever get a chance to visit them on holiday, thanks once again to the British weather!
