Rio de Janeiro has world-wide appeal and is well known for its colourful carnival, the sounds of the samba and the famous Christ the Redeemer Statue standing over the city from Corcovado Mountain.
The International Airport and the world class sports stadiums, Maracana Soccer Stadium and the Olympic Engenhao Stadium are also close to the city centre.
Beaches
The best beaches lie on the outskirts of the city and include the famous Copacabana Beach, Ipanema Beach, Leblon Beach, Aproador Beach and Barra de Tijuca Beach. The beaches are popular social scenes, perfect for sunbathing and have some great surfing spots.
Things to Do
Rio de Janerio has plenty of museums and historic architecture; in the Centro district alone you can see the National Museum of Fine Arts, the National History Museum, the floating Navy Museums, Tiradentes Palace, the Imperial Palace and the Palace of Laranjeiras in the Guinle Park.
The Parque do Flamengo combines leisure and cultural attractions and runs for approx 2km along the coast, heading south from downtown Rio. As well as a myriad of sports facilities the park is home to the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Carmen Miranda and the National World War II Museum.
Out and About
Downtown Lapa and the Centro district enjoy a vibrant nightlife and cultural scene with many bars having live music. The beach zones of Copacabana and Ipanema offer endless choices of bars at any time of the day. Restaurants are plentiful, in the city and in the beach zones, with menus spanning all budgets and tastes.
Good shopping malls can be found at Leblon and Gavea and the largest malls are at Barra de Tijuca.
Nearby Attractions
On the outskirts of the city you will find the world famous attractions of Corcovado Mountain, where you can take the train up to the Christ the Redeemer Statue and; Sugarloaf Mountain where you can take the cable car for amazing views. Stroll around the Rodrigo de Freitas Lake and visit the Botanic Gardens or visit the Tijuca National Park where you can hike through the rainforests.
The beaches of Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon and Aproador are within 10km and Barra da Tijuca is approx 18km away.
