Puerto Vallarta offers mile upon mile of beautiful pristine sands so if it's a quiet secluded beach you want or a lively beach with plenty going on, you will find it in Puerto Vallarta. Bordered by the Sierra Madre foothills, the beaches offer fantastic scenery which just adds to the relaxing atmosphere.
One of the resorts most famous and popular beaches has to be Los Muertos which is located in the Romantic Zone. This lively beach is very long and has a great range of facilities including beach clubs, bars and restaurants.
If you are looking for something a little quieter, try Playa Conchas Chinas which is said to be one of the more peaceful areas in the resort.
Things to Do
Although many people are happy just lying on the beach all day, you may fancy a wander round Puerto Vallarta's old town. The old town is full of white stucco buildings and cobbled streets so there is plenty to see. The Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe is the main feature of the old town and it can be quite busy come December when thousands of Catholic pilgrims visit during the 12 day festival.
If you happen to visit the resort in mid November you will be able to take part in a whole host of activities such as concerts, art exhibits, cocktail parties, tequila and wine tasting events and festive dinners. These events are all part of the November Festival which takes place every year.
There are so many activities available in Puerto Vallarta, many of which are water based, such as scuba diving, snorkeling, boat cruises and whale/dolphin watching tours. Other activities include tennis, golf and horseriding.
Another popular attraction is the Sea Turtle Camp and Crocodile Adventure where you can learn lots about these animals, learn all about the conservation programme, visit a sea turtle nursery and even release the sea turtles back into the ocean. This is not only interesting but a lot of fun too.
I think it's fair to say, you can do as much or as little as you want to in Puerto Vallerta.

If you are a keen surfer then take a trip to Playa de Sayulita which is approx 45 minutes from Puerto Vallarta. It's great for fishing and surfing and is very popular spot with surfers all year round.
In the Marieta Islands, close to Puerta Vallarta, you will find the Hidden Beach which is said to be one of the most popular beaches in Mexico. The beach is actually a hole in the ground and only accessible via a very tight tunnel which you have to swim to and only in low tide so it's probably not for non swimmers. The beach is protected from the outside world and really has to be seen to appreciate its beauty.
Another beautiful place is the Vallarta Botanical Gardens approx 30km from Puerto Vallarta. The beautiful nature park is full of orchids, bromeliads and wild palms. You can enjoy a nice meal at the restaurant while butterflies and hummingbirds fly around you then afterwards you can take a refreshing dip in the river.
For a scenic trip through the Sierra Madre Mountains, visit the Rancho El Charro and take a 3 to 8 hour trek on a horse. It's a great way to see the area and some rides are even suitable for children.
