The beach

Just 500-metres from the harbour area of Porto Colom is the main beach Cala Marcal, an inlet of fine sand which gently slopes into clear calm water. There are plenty of facilities at hand, sun-beds and parasols for hire, a small playground for children and pedal boats. Refreshments are available at the beach bar, as well as several restaurants close by.

On the opposite side of the bay to the harbour there are a further two beaches S'Arenal Grand and S'Arenal Petit. Due to their location away from the resort hotels generally sees these beaches frequented by locals. There are two beach bars adjacent to the beaches.

Further south of the resort on the way to Cala d'Or is the Cala Sa Nau beach, a small unspoilt cove just 45-metres long and 70-metres wide with fine white sand and crystal clear water. Surrounded by low cliffs and pines this remote beach is well facilitated with sun-loungers and parasols available to hire, and a beach hut for refreshments.

Things to do

The resort's main historical attraction is the prehistoric burial site (navetas), as one of the best preserved on the island it's also one of the oldest. Other sights in the area include the Sanctuary of Sant Salvador found on top of the mountain known as Saint Salvador, and the Santueri Castle which sits on top of a rocky outcrop with walls which date from the 14th century.

There are also plenty of watersports on offer in Porto Colom, from the fun types such as the banana and doughnut rides, to the more skilled types such as water-skiing, sailing and windsurfing. There are several diving schools in the resort and plenty of places to hire equipment.
