Playa De Los Cancajos, La Palma, Canary Islands
Playa de los Cancajos is the main tourist resort on the island of La Palma, and offers a peaceful retreat in a beautiful tranquil setting.
Playa De Los Cancajos
Playa de Los Cancajos has a family-friendly beach, water-sports, international restaurants and even a couple of nightclubs. It is just 4km from the capital of Santa Cruz de la Palma, a few minutes from the national airport and in easy reach of diving spots. All in all this makes it the most popular base for holiday-makers on the east coast.

Los Cancajos beach is quite long and wide (approx 400 metres by 35 metres) and very popular. It is backed by a cliff and protected from the sea by a reef and man-made breakwaters, created from rocks to form 3 bays. Nevertheless, it can still be quite windy but the waves are much tamer than alternative beaches along the coast. The beach is made of black sand and there are toilets, car parking, shops and restaurants nearby.
Things to Do
There are PADI diving centres in the resort running courses and trips to the numerous diving spots all around the east, south and west coasts of La Palma. The volcanic activity around the island makes for an interesting underwater landscape of lava arches, caves, canyons and cliffs.
Spend a day at Santa Cruz de la Palma, maybe do a little shopping and stop for lunch. The historic quarter has narrow cobbled streets lined with traditional Canarian styled buildings with wooden balconies. You can sit in the town squares, soak up the atmosphere in the terrace cafes and stroll along the waterfront promenade.
The quiet little town of Fuencaliente, surrounded by rugged cliffs and banana plantations, is best known for it's proximity to the San Antonio volcano. You can follow the walking trail from the Fuencaliente Visitor Centre around the rim of the San Antonio volcano, passing the Teneguia volcano down to Punta Fuencaliente. At Punta Fuencaliente there is a small dark sand and pebble beach, a wide expanse of salt pans and a little museum attached to the old lighthouse. If you time it right, you will be able to get the bus back.
Out and About
In the resort of Playa de los Cancajos there is a good choice of bars and restaurants offering international menus as well as Canarian cuisine. There are also mini-markets, a children's play area and a few tourist shops.
