Monto Gordo is well known for it's fantastic beaches which are perfect for chilling out. The long beach promenade is a great place to try out the fantastic fish restaurants and pavement cafes. There are some bars, a nightclub and a casino which often features live shows. Quite a quiet resort with plenty to do in the surrounding area.

Monto Gordo is a bright and cheerful town that has developed considerably as a holiday resort in recent years. The resort mixes old fishing traditions with new modern facilities such as the towns casino and offers the largest beach in the Algarve. The transfer time is 1 hour from Faro airport.

The resort of Monte Gordo is more or less one big beach and not only is it one of the largest in the Algarve but it also has the warmest waters. This glorious beach is accessible to all which makes it very popular among families. There are walkways and ramps leading to the sand which makes it easy for those with buggies or wheelchairs. There is also other equipment to make the beach even more accessible for those in wheelchairs. There is a lifeguard in attendance in the summer months and there are plenty of watersports available.
There are plenty of cafes and bars on the beach itself and even more, along with shops and restaurants across the road from the beach so you will easily be able to spend the day on or around the beach.
A little further along, you will find Praia de Cacela Velha, a sand pit which is separated from the shore by a lagoon. It is accessible on foot by Manta Rota or you can catch a boat from Sitio da Fabrica. The beach is beautiful but there are no bars or restaurants at all so you would need to take provisions with you.
Things to Do
There are many sports that are popular here such as windsurfing and kite surfing but perhaps one of the most popular activities is cycling. The area is so flat and with plenty of places to hire bikes, it's a great way to see the area. There are plenty of fantastic golf courses in the area too so if golf is your thing then this is the place to be.
There are plenty of boats for trips up the river Guadiana if you prefer to see the area from the water.
If you prefer getting out and about and doing some sightseeing, then there is plenty to see. There are 3 churches in the area which are worth a visit for those interested in historical attractions. There are also galleries and museums for those who want to soak up a little culture.
Out and About
The main road in Monte Gordo is literally covered in shops, cafes and restaurants which is just perfect for any items you may need for your day at the beach or indeed any refreshments you may require during the day.
There are some great restaurants if you want to sample some of the freshly caught seafood or perhaps some more traditional food.
Monte Gordo is quite lively and as well as having some great bars, there is also a nightclub for those who want to party the night away. Another popular spot at night has to be the casino, it's popular with both locals and visitors. As well as the standard slot machines and card tables, there is also the chance to have a meal, see a show or simply dance the night away.
There are several festivals held throughout the year and they can be lots of fun and a great way to see the locals celebrate what is important to them.
Nearby Attractions
If you fancy a day out, take a trip to Faro. There is lots to see here, such as the Praca de Dom Francisco Gomes and the Moorish Old Town or you could simply wander round the shops and markets to see what is on offer.
Lagos is another resort which is worth visiting. The town looks like a moorish palace with definite Arab influence which makes it exotic and exciting. As well as the historic fortifications, there is a lovely marina, waterfront and ancient slave market so there really is plenty to see and do.
The Zoo Marine in Guia is a very popular choice for families with children and is the highlight of many a holiday. Visitors will be able to see dolphins, sea lions, seals, tropical birds and various birds of prey. There is also an aquarium with exotic fish and sharks and there is a 4D cinema too so there is plenty to keep everyone occupied.
