Located on the slopes of the Rila Mountain, Borovets is a modern skiing resort with a good choice of skiing trails and cross country tracks appropriate for beginners and a fair choice for skiers of intermediate and advanced ability too.
Schools and instructors for skiing and snow-boarding are available in the resort. Other activities include snow mobiling and horse-riding.
During the summer the region tracks are marked out in varying difficulties for cyclists instead.
Things to Do
A must-see is the Rila Monastery, located in the Rila Mountain. Surrounded by ancient stone walls, you can see the richly decorated Monastery, parts of which date back to the 10th century, the 14th century Hyrelu Tower, the ornate chapel, the library and the residential buildings.
In the neighbouring town of Samokov (9km) you can experience authentic daily life, browse the History Museum and admire the impressive murals in the medieval Belyova Church.
Out and About
Hiking trails through the Rila Mountain reward you with picturesque landscapes across the Seven Rila Lakes and impressive views from Musala Peak, the highest point in Bulgaria.
The Rila National Park also has 4 nature reserves and woodlands, mineral springs and eco-trails.
Nearby Attractions
Outside of the resort many sight-seeing opportunities await in the capital of Sofia (75km) or you could visit the thermal waters of the Belchinski Baths in the nearby village of Belchin (25km).
