Aghios Nikolaos is set around a busy harbour which opens onto the beautiful Gulf of Mirabello. A lively resort with a good selection of shops, bars, restaurants and discos. There are plenty of watersports available as well as many outdoor activities. The resort is well suited to families and couples.
Aghios Nikolaos
Aghios Nikolaos is a charming town and offers the perfect environment for walking around browsing the many shops or just sitting in one of the street cafes watching the world go by. There are many shops which are popular for Cretan gifts such as ceramics, leatherware, jewellery and Raki (the local spirit). Most activity centres around the harbour where there are tavernas and bars and at night these turn into lively hotspots for those seeking a more lively atmosphere.
The resort is steeped in history as an old fishing village and there is a 7th century chapel which is worth a visit.
Beaches
There is a number of sheltered sandy beaches in and around Aghios Nikolaos and although many of them are small they are all within a 15 minute walk. Ammos beach is the nearest which is a sandy public beach by the marina. Alternatively there is Kitroplatia, a shingle and sand beach, and on the way to Elouda are the beaches of Ammoudi and Havania where there are beach bars, watersports and sun loungers.
Nearby Attractions
Just a twenty minute drive away is the resort of Elounda which is a large and lively Cretan resort. Elounda harbour provides an endless array of boat trips including the popular trip to the haunting island of Spinalonga, a former leper colony.
