Cayo Coco is one of the many islands and keys which form the Jardines del Rey, just off of the east coast of Cuba and it is linked to the mainland via a causeway.
The island of Cayo Coco is an ecological paradise, perfect for doing nothing but lazing around on the pristine white sand beaches and enjoying the seclusion and natural surroundings.
Things to Do
There is a wide variety of watersports available from fishing to kitesurfing. Numerous reefs and the crystal clear and calm turquoise waters, make it a popular spot for snorkelling and scuba diving.
Nature lovers might enjoy birdwatching amid the mangroves and lagoons and there is also a large flamingo colony. La Redonda lake is a hotspot for freshwater fishing, particularly trout and bass and you can also take boat trips around the surrounding network of canals, a natural habitat for herons and hummingbirds.
Across the causeway, on the mainland, the La Leche Lagoon, so named for its milky white waters is also home to a large colony of Caribbean flamingos as well as being a popular venue for fishing.
Out and About
Most entertainment is hotel based but a popular night out is the Cuban Night at the Jabali Cave.
Nearby Attractions
A couple of kilometres inland from the lagoon is Moron, where you can take a horse-drawn carriage around the charming city streets, see the symbolic bronze rooster which crows every hour, visit the city museum and see the remains of the 19th century fortresses.
You can also visit El Pueblo Holandes, a charming Dutch style village on the island of Turiguano and maybe even catch one of the weekend rodeo shows.
