Kingston, Jamaica

Kingston, the capital of Jamaica is situated on the south eastern coast of the island and is a hive of activity both day and night. There are two main areas, Downtown and New Kingston, the latter being the home of the famous Bob Marley museum which is on the site of his former home.

There are many bars, restaurants and hotels offering live entertainment as well as a club offering a good selection of music into the early hours. If you want to get away from the busy beaches there is certainly plenty to see and do.

Beaches

The waterfront at Kingston is dominated by the harbour, but there are beaches nearby. Take a boat from Port Royal to the white sands of Lime Cay, a small uninhabited island just 2 miles south of the harbour. For a serviced beach and more activities, head for Fort Clarence and for fishing and swimming, try Hellshire Beach.

Things to Do

Kingston is the cultural capital of Jamaica and features many historic attractions, not least it's large natural harbour, all of which sits in the shelter of the Blue Mountains. Needless to say, there are plenty of sightseeing and leisure activities in and around the city to keep you occupied.

The Blue Mountains provide scenic driving around twisting roads and sharp bends, as well as plenty of cycling, walking and hiking trails; with the chance to visit coffee plantations and discover mountain villages. Leisure time within the city can be enjoyed at Emancipation Park which has relaxing gardens with water features and a jogging track. Just across from the park is a mini-amusement park for young children.

Popular visitor attractions within the city include Devon House and The Bob Marley Museum, which is located in the former home of Jamaica's musical legend. Devon House is a Georgian mansion set in 11 acres of landscaped grounds; browse the furnished rooms of this historic property and be sure to try the ice cream before you leave.

Out and About

Kingston has a full range of dining options, from international fast food chains to fresh seafood, Caribbean restaurants and numerous beach shacks. For modern shopping the Sovereign Centre offers 3 floors of shops, groceries and cafes or, there is the New Kingston Shopping Centre and the surrounding boutiques and department stores.

For market shopping, the covered Jubilee Market is packed with stalls selling all sorts of goods and buzzing with local atmosphere. For local craft works however, you might want to browse the Kingston Crafts Market on the waterfront.

Nearby Attractions

The Castleton Botanical Gardens provide a relaxing day out and are set in 10 hectares of grounds, in the small village of Castleton (20km).

In the evening you could take a trip out to Bull Bay (9km) and soak up the rhythm of local nightlife at the clubs along the beach.
